Breakfast. We are in Billefjorden, close to the abandoned Russian settlement Pyramiden. We will go there today, if we find a way to get there. The fjord is full of ice and we will probably have to walk over it.

A ghost town in the middle of the Arctic. The Russians had a coal mine here from the seventies. In the middle of the nineties, Arktikugol, the company that ran the settlement, decided to shut it down and over 1000 people were evacuated in 4 days time. People literally put their spoons down at the dinner table and left. It is a complete self-supporting society: with its own powerplant, swimming pool, people's house, you name it.
It has a very sad aura.

Arctic Tipping Points outreach cruise to Spitsbergen.
This time, we will be visiting most of the scientific stations and settlements on Spitsbergen, interview people and make reportages.

We are working on a book called Svalbard Life, richly illustrated with photographs, drawings and paintings. Authors are Paul Wassmann and Rudi Caeyers, and many other contributors.

Arctic Frontiers 2011

Arctic Frontiers conferentie is achter de rug, met duizenden bezoekers deze keer. De opwarming van de aarde en de milieuproblematiek komen steeds meer onder de aandacht.
Ons Arctic Tipping Points-boek over het Noordpoolgebied werd aan het grote publiek voorgesteld, een samenwerkingsproject tussen de Universiteit van Tromsø, het Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) en BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge, met steun van de Banco de Bilbao in Spanje. Op de foto hierboven zie je enkele deelnemers aan de conferentie, rechts de Noorse minister van buitenlandse zaken Jonas Gahr Støre met ons boek in de hand. Je kan het hele boek hier downloaden.

The Arctic Frontiers conference is over and attracted thousands of participants. Global warming and environmental issues are high on the agenda.
Our Arctic Tipping Points book was also introduced to the public, a cooperation between the University of Tromsø, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) and BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge, with support of the Banco de Bilbao in Spain.
On the above picture, you can see some participants to the conference and the Norwegian secretary of foreign affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre, presenting our book.

Senja my love

Went on a roadtrip with my friend Boele last weekend, crossing the island of Senja in northern Norway. Senja is one of the biggest islands in Norway and it has all the different landscapes as in the rest of the country: balmy slopes, hills and flowers, while further west, we met violent mountains raging high with teeth like a T-rex.

Hornsund. Bezoek aan het Pools onderzoeksstation. Het is een stralend mooie dag met open hemel en zon. De zee is rustig en we mogen zonder survivalsuit in de zodiac. De fjord ligt nog dichtgevroren en we moeten een plek vinden om aan te leggen. Er is een kleine peninsula met een kapel, hier gaan we aan land. Enfin, een wereld van ijs eigenlijk. Er zitten ijsberen in de buurt en we hebben gewapende wachten bij. Eerst krijgen we een warme lunch in het station en dan vertrekt de eerste groep voor een tochtje naar de gletsjer die op een paar kilometer hier vandaan ligt. Na veel geploeter door sneeuw en over ijs komen we aan: een wonderlijk zicht: een enorme gletsjer komt uit in de zee, azuren ijsblokken dobberen in 't water. Aan de flank, aan een muur van ijs hangen miljoenen ijspegels te glinsteren in de zon.
Onderweg terug naar het schip botst onze zodiac op een rots die zich juist onder water bevindt. Het krioelt hier van de klippen: scherpe rotsen die niet altijd te zien zijn. De zodiac stopt met een knal en ik dacht even dat de boot lek geslagen was. Samen met een Pool was ik vooraan gaan zitten en we worden alletwee bijna overboord gekatapulteerd. Die Poolse gast hangt half overboord en in moet hem terug binnenboord sleuren. Zoiets is ferm verschieten, geloof me, en we zitten allemaal te bibberen ineens. Onze matroos aan het stuur is er ook niet goed van en blijft vragen of alles ok is. De vent zou beter moeten weten en voorzichtiger sturen. Gelukkig hadden we geen al te hoge snelheid en ging alles goed. Deze keer.

We are visiting the Polish station in Hornsund. It is a beautiful, sunny day with open skies. With quiet seas, we are allowed to enter the zodiacs without survival suits. The fjord is still frozen and we need to find a spot to go ashore: a small peninsula with a little chapel on it. We enter a world of ice. Polar bears have been spotted today so we have armed guards with us. First we visit the station where we get a warm lunch and afterwards, we leave for a trip to the nearby glacier. After an hours walk we reach a wonderful place: a huge glacier flows into the sea, with hundreds of azure chunks of ice floating in the water. At the periphery, there is a huge wall of ice, with millions of icy stalachtites glimmering in the sun, beautiful.
On our way back to the ship, our zodiac hits an underwater rock. The zodiac stops with a bang, luckily it did not have too high speed. I am in front with one of the Polish scientists and we nearly get catapulted out into the water. The Polish guy is hanging halfway overboard and I have to haul him back in. For a second, I thought we had punctured the zodiac. It's dangerous seas here, and our sailor at the engine should have been more careful. He's quite shocked and worried but all went well, this time.

Weekend. Iedereen slaapt wat langer en het is rustig aan boord.
Gisteren werd er weer een bodemtrawl uitgezet en deze keer was de vangst groter. Ongelooflijk wat een leven er zich onder water bevindt, beestjes die ik nog nooit eerder heb gezien. En wat een kleurenpracht!

Weekend and everyone stays a bit longer in bed. Quiet on board.
Yesterday, the marine biologists put out another trawl and got a better catch this time. Incredible what hides beneath the water surface, critters I never ever layed eyes on. And those colours!

Vandaag bezoeken we het meteorologisch station op Hopen: een lang, smal eiland en een beschermd natuurreservaat met hoge, steile klippen waar het krioelt van de broedende vogels.
Survival suit aan, camera's inpakken in plastic en de zodiac in. Er staat een tamelijk ruwe zee en voor het strand ligt een hele strook met ijsblokken. Daar moeten we door en over. Er wacht een welkomscomité en we springen van ijsblok naar ijsblok om aan land te geraken. Koffie en taart, geweldig. Er wonen 4 mensen in het station, telkens voor 6 maanden, dan is het verandering van wacht. Verhalen over ijsberen, een wandeling langs het strand en miljoenen vogels !



Today, we visited the meteorological station on the isle of Hopen: a long, thin island and reservation with lots of breeding place for birds. We put on survival suits, wrapped our gear in plastic bags and hopped into the zodiac. Bit of a rough sea and the beach front was covered in icebergs, an obstacle we needed to get through and over. A welcoming comitee was waiting for us on the beach but first we had to hop over the icebergs to get ashore. Coffee and cake was already served. Four people live at the station for 6 months at a time. And 4 dogs, permanently.

Vijf voor vijf 's ochtends: ijs! Battaklang tegen de romp. Effe door de patrijspoort loeren: nog steeds grijs en veel ijs. Mm, ik draai me toch nog maar ns effe om in de kajuit.

Five to five in the morning and I wake up of the sound of ice against the hull of the ship. Outside, it's still grey, with ice as far as the eye can see. This will be the view for the coming days, so I turn around in my bunk and take another nap.
